Common Car Accident Injuries

Each year in the U.S. more than six million car accidents are reported to police, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Unfortunately, at least three million of those accidents involve injuries to one or more people.

The types of injuries that can result from car accidents range from minor injuries, such as bruises, cuts and scrapes, to moderate injuries, such as broken bones, to serious, life-altering injuries, or even fatal injury.

Following are some of the most frequently seen injuries associated with automobile accidents:

Head, Neck and Back Injuries The head, neck and back are the three most common body parts injured in traffic accidents.

Typical head injuries include concussions, damage to the face, bruising of the brain and fractures of the skull.

The most severe of all head injuries is traumatic brain injury (TBI). A TBI injury results when there is a sudden external blow to the head that causes often-irreversible brain damage. TBI symptoms can be mild to severe, but all affect cognitive ability after the accident.

Common neck injuries from car accidents include whiplash, which is the number-one reported injury to the body from crashes, neck sprains and other neck-disc injuries.

The back is very vulnerable in a car accident, as well. Back muscles and nerves can be easily injured when the body's torso is tossed forward, backward or to the side. Herniated discs and pinched nerves are common complaints.

Perhaps the most brutal of all back injuries is spinal cord injury. Spinal cord injury can mean partial or full paralysis.

Limb Injuries Car accidents can cause fractures, crushed bones and other injuries to the arms, legs, hands, fingers, wrists, ankles, feet, hips, knees and shoulders. Rotator cuffs are also a common site for injuries.

Internal Organ Injuries Internal organ damage can occur from seat belts and extreme force, from parts of the vehicle crushing a person or from a person being thrown from a vehicle. The spleen, kidneys, liver, bowels, heart and lungs are at risk.

Burn Injuries If a vehicle catches fire during an accident, a person can suffer burn injuries. Burn injuries can be some of the most physically painful of any type of injury. Burn injuries can result in a lifetime of surgeries, scarring, loss of function and emotional pain.

Even though victims of car accidents are typically extremely traumatized, there are important steps victims need to take to ensure they receive the monetary compensation they deserve. On average, there are over 6 million cars on the roads at any given time in the United States. More than 3 million people get injured due to car accidents, with more than 2 million of these injuries being permanent. There are over 40,000 fatalities due to car accidents every year. Although this is a very high number by itself, the good news is that statistics are actually showing that the number of car accident fatalities has been decreasing in recent years.
